On this International Day of Solidarity with Gaza, 9th August 2014, we join protest movements across the world in condemning the genocide in Gaza by Israel.

We stand in support of the call given by the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Movement to observe today as a ‘Day of Rage’ against Israel.

We also condemn the Indian government’s military, trade, educational and cultural ties with Israel. On this day, the seventy-second anniversary of the Quit India movement, we demand of Israel: Quit Palestine!

Zionist Israel’s wars of invasion against Palestine and its most recent attacks on Gaza have escalated into relentless bombardment and a brutal siege. Israel’s assault on the Palestinian people is beginning to count among the world’s worst crimes against humanity. Gaza today is a concentration camp, the largest ‘open air’ prison on the globe. The toll on Palestinian lives, in this current wave of Israeli aggression alone, is 1,886 killed including 432 children, and 9,806 injured including 2,979 children. This shockingly high figure of children killed or injured is not unintentional. Nor can the deaths of civilians, more than 70 per cent of the total number of deaths according to the UN, be accepted as ‘collateral damage’, as cynically labelled by Israel’s regime. Hospitals, schools, homes and even UN relief shelters are being persistently targeted; civilian life and daily needs, including electricity, water supply and medical resources, are being ravaged; the residents of Gaza are trapped and left with no exit route.

Israel is only able to carry out these brutal attacks with the support of its allies, led by the imperialist United States of America. The US government is its main partner and continues to supply Tel Aviv with US weaponry, which is in immediate and lethal use by the Israeli army. But others, including the Indian government, stand indicted by their implicit and explicit acceptance of Israel’s crimes. Until worldwide sanctions and boycotts are in place against Israel’s blatant violation of international laws, its apartheid policies and genocidal violence against the Palestinian people, Israel will continue its aggression with impunity. This must end.

It is shameful that India has abandoned its longstanding commitment to uphold Palestine’s right to self-determination and to resist Israel’s colonisation, a right that it once claimed for itself as a colonised nation. We call upon the Indian government to:
1. Immediately and unequivocally condemn Israel’s war on Gaza.
2. Raise its voice in the world arena and at international forums in support of Palestine’s demands including, immediately lifting of all blockades on the Gaza Strip and indefinite extension of the ceasefire.
3. Boycott all forms of direct and indirect collaboration with the Israeli state and Israeli corporations.
4. End its military ties with Israel, as India’s huge arms purchases help to subsidise Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.

We call upon the international community, and the Indian people in particular, to stand by the struggle of the Palestinian people for their just demands for an independent sovereign state of Palestine, for immediate release of imprisoned Palestinians, and for withdrawal of the Israeli army and Israeli settlers from all occupied territories of the 1967 base.
